Midazolam is a Benzodiazepine. The chemical classification of midazolam is Benzodiazepines.

Midazolam is a short-acting benzodiazepine derivative with an imidazole structure and with anxiolytic, amnestic, hypnotic, anticonvulsant and sedative properties. Dormicum is used to relieve anxiety and cause sleepiness among patients due for surgery. It also causes loss of consciousness and short-term memory before and during surgery. Some uses include treatment of patients in intensive care units, dental extraction and other minor and major operations. The drug allows individuals to withstand stress and cooperate during hospital procedures.

INDICATION

The midazolam injection is indicated for preoperative sedation/anziolysis/amnesia. It is also an agent for sedation/anziolysis/amnesia prior to or during diagnostic, therapeutic, or endoscopic procedures. Midazolam can also be given intravenously for induction of general anaesthesia.

Treatment of prolonged, acute, convulsive seizures in infants, toddlers, children and adolescents (from 3 months to< 18 years).

You should not take this medicine if:

1. You have narrow-angle glaucoma.

2. You are allergic to cherries.

3. You are allergic to midazolam or to other benzodiazepines, such as alprazolam (Xanax), chlordiazepoxide (Librium), clorazepate (Tranxene), diazepam (Valium), lorazepam (Ativan), or oxazepam (Serax).

Contraindications for Dormicum are patients suffering from bipolar disorder, psychosis, drug or alcohol abuse, heart, kidney or liver disease, lung problems, myasthenia gravis, Parkinson’s disease, suicidal ideations, shortness of breath, pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers. These individuals should first consult their doctors prior to consumption of the drug. Some drugs may also interact with Dormicum like disulfiram, flumazenil, isoniazid, levodopa, probenecid, ranitidine, St. John’s wort, caffeine and cimetidine.

DOSAGE METHOD

Tablet

Adult 7.5-15 mg.

Elderly, debilitated patients 7.5 mg.

IV Conscious sedation

Initially 2.5 mg given 5-10 min pre-op. Max: 5 mg. Further doses of 1 mg may be given.

Adult >60 yr: Initially 1-1.5 mg & given 5-10 min before procedure.

Further doses of 0.5-1 mg may be given. Max. 3.5 mg.

Induction Premed adult dose: 0.15-0.2 mg/kg IV.

Non-premed adult dose: 0.3-0.35 mg/kg body wt IV.

Maintenance 0.03-0.1 mg/kg/hr.

IV sedation

Loading dose 0.03-0.3 mg/kg.

Maintenance: 0.03-0.2 mg/kg/hr.

Anaesth Premed: 20-60 min before induction of anaesth, usual dose 5 mg IV.

What is the dose of Dormicum® (midazolam) for a child?

Childn 1-15 yr 0.08-0.2 mg/kg body wt IV.

What to do in case of an emergency or overdose?

In case of an emergency or an overdose, call your local emergency services or go to your nearest emergency room.

MISSED DOSE

If you miss a dose of Dormicum, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your regular dose as scheduled. Do not take a double dose.

NEGATIVE EFFECTS

Common expected side effects include irritability, coughing, hiccups, insomnia, nightmares, drowsiness, headache, nausea, vomiting, restlessness and speech difficulty.

Uncommon side effects include mental confusion, hypotension, coma, dizziness, impaired balance, reflexes and coordination, seizures, skin rash and palpitations. These should be reported immediately to a doctor.
